Sales through Nielsen BookScan's Total Consumer Market (TCM), which covers over 90% of UK book retail and internet sales, for the 52 weeks ending 30th December 2006. Revenue for 2006 includes full-year sales for acquired companies (Hachette Livre includes Little, Brown; Random House Group includes BBC Books adult titles).

* Main growth figure represents 'like-for-like' growth (with acquired companies included in 2005 and 2006 sales). Therefore the percentage is not calculable from the displayed revenue totals. Figures in brackets show 'organic growth' (with acquired companies removed from the totals).

OUP BULLET IN

Showing impressive growth of 6.9%, the academic giant OUP is often overlooked in analysis of trade publishing. It said sales were generated by close work with retailers and wholesalers "to improve all aspects of our deliivery, service, and marketing". Areas of investment and trade growth were law, medicine, and higher education. It also ramped up sales, marketing and PR for "key brands and copyrights", leading to higher market shares in reference and dictionaries, and the continuing success of the Very Short Introductions series. Its children's books arm also had a strong 2006. Richard Hodson, trade and children's business director, highlights Peter Pan in Scarlet, dictionaries, the Read at Home series, and the relaunch of the Winnie the Witch series.
