Housing avalanche

Letter in The Oxford Mail, 30th July 2004

SIR - Our worst fears about future housing in Oxfordshire appear to be coming true.

The South East England Regional Assembly, an unelected quango, is planning to foist a huge number of new homes on Oxfordshire. The county Structure Plan envisages an increase of 37,000 over 15 years. SEERA's plans would push up the figure to a staggering 77,000 by 2026.

If that figure is approved, Oxford City Council's dream of building homes south of Grenoble Road would become a betting certainty.

But the proposals are bound to cause horror elsewhere too. The alternatives - expanding existing towns, developing a new town and building on the Green Belt in the A34 corridor - are all hugely controversial.

We know new homes are needed. What we cannot accept is that the decision-making appears to be drifting further and further away from the people of Oxfordshire. That cannot be right in our so-called democracy.
