College arms: "Argent, a chevron engrailed gules, on a chief azure three mullets pierced or"

THE College was founded by public subscription as a memorial to John Keble. The foundation stone was laid on St Mark's Day, 1868; the College opened its doors in 1870.

The architect was William Butterfield. That his grand design was almost completed within a decade was due, above all, to the generosity of William Gibbs of Tyntesfield, Somerset, and of his sons. Butterfield's scheme was never carried out in its entirety, but the buildings of the 1870s were sufficient for the College's needs until 1945. In 1957 one unfinished range was rounded off by a small extension (part of a benefaction by Antonin Besse); the library was extended in 1966 and 1980. A large new building (by Ahrends, Burton, and Koralek) was added in the 1970s, financed principally by benefactions from the Adeby Trust and the Hayward Foundation. The Arco Building, providing chiefly undergraduate accommodation, was completed in 1995, and the Sloane-Robinson Building, containing a full-size theatre, in 2002. Both are by Rick Mather Associates Ltd.

By its original charter the College was to be governed by a Warden, a Bursar, and some nine tutors and lecturers. Of the fellowships subsequently created, several have been endowed, wholly or in part, by benefactors: in French (Antonin Besse, 1951), Physics (Rank Organization Charitable Trust, 1969), Experimental Pathology (Edward Penley Abraham Research Fund, 1974), Engineering Science (Rolls-Royce, 1978), Philosophy (Nippon Life Insurance Company, 1988), Japanese Studies (Industrial Bank of Japan, 1988), and Engineering (Shell-Pocock, 1989). Two Research Fellowships have been established in association with the Edward Penley Abraham Research Fund.

'The Light of the World', by Holman Hunt (1853), was given to the College by Mrs Martha Coombe. Among the College's many other debts to its benefactors are notable collections of illuminated manuscripts and early printed books, mainly from gifts by C. E. Brooke and H. P. Liddon.

The College awards scholarships to undergraduates achieving distinction in University examinations, or on other evidence of outstanding academic work. It offers a number of Graduate Scholarships. Travel Bursaries and other awards are offered each year by the Keble Association.
