The corporate designation of the College is 'The Warden and Fellows of St Antony's College in the University of Oxford'. Its foundation was made possible by the gift of the late Monsieur Antonin Besse of Aden. Provisional arrangements for its creation were made by a decree passed by Congregation on 21 September 1948. On 30 May 1950 a further decree bestowed on the College the status of a New Foundation, with the right to present its members for matriculation. On I April 1953 a Charter of Incorporation was granted, and the Statutes of the College were approved by the Queen in Council. On 2 October 1962 a Supplementary Charter was granted to enable the College to admit women as well as men. On 21 May 1963 a statute was passed in Congregation making the College a full College of the University, and this was approved by the Queen in Council on 20 December 1963.
Students of the College are men and women working for higher degrees of the University. The College has special concern for studies and research in modern history, the social sciences, international relations and literature, with particular reference to certain regions of the world: Europe, Russia and the former Soviet States, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and the Maghreb, Africa, South, South East and East Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. Much of its work is carried On within the framework of regional centres or groups, which organize seminars, maintain specialized libraries, and promote research in other ways.
