College arms: "Argent, three mullets gules in chevron reversed between six crosses crosslet fitched sable"
THE College was founded in 1879 under the title of Somerville Hall. The name was given in honour of Mary Somerville, mathematician and scientist, and the arms and motto of her family were adopted by the Hall.
In 1881 it was registered under the Companies Act as an Association not intended for profit; and in 1894 its name was changed from Somerville Hall to College, to indicate its intention of acquiring that status. In 1920 women were admitted to matriculation, degrees, membership of Congregation, and other privileges of the University. Six years later Somerville was incorporated by Royal Charter as 'The Principal and Council of Somerville College'. In 1951 its statutes were amended to restrict membership of the Governing Body to the Principal and Fellows. Finally, in 1959 it was admitted with the other Women's Societies as a full College of the University, and its corporate designation became 'The Principal and Fellows of Somerville College in the University of Oxford'. In 1992 the Governing Body set in motion procedures to change the College's charter and statutes to make possible the admission of men at both senior and junior levels. The first male Fellow was admitted in 1993, the first male junior members in 1994.
The College has a number of Trust funds, resulting from generous gifts and bequests. These provide Scholarships and Exhibitions (awarded to members of the College after the First Public Examination), prizes, and grants for undergraduate travel abroad in vacation. Scholarships and Research grants for graduate students are also offered annually.
The following research fellowships, open to all qualified graduates, are offered by the College from time to time: the Mary Somerville, the Mary Ewart, the Dame Catherine Fulford, and the Ernest Cook Research fellowship. Somerville is one of the colleges to which the Joanna Randall-McIver Research Fellowship is restricted, and the fellowship is tenable at the College every few years.
In the following lists, the symbol
* after a person's name indicates that he or she is also a Fellow or Honorary Fellow of another college.
+ indicates the holder of a University or CUF post.
~ indicates the holder of a statutory professorship or readership.
