College arms: "Gules, a chevron between three roses argent, seeded or, barbed vert impaling gules, a bend or between two escallops argent"
THE College was founded jointly by Nicholas Wadham, of Merifield in Somerset, and Dorothy Wadham, daughter of Sir John Petre. Its corporate designation is 'The Warden, Fellows and Scholars of Wadham College in the University of Oxford of the Foundation of Nicholas Wadham, Esquire, and Dorothy his wife'. Letters patent were obtained from James I in 1610, the Statutes were promulgated in 1612, and the College was constituted in 1613. Since 1974 the College has been open to members of both sexes. Fellowships are endowed by or in memory of: Humphrey Hody, Regius Professor of Greek (died 1706); John Wills, Warden 1783-1806; Ralph Heap (died 1909); E. W Webster, Fellow (killed in action 1917); Sir Algernon Methuen (died 1924), Dame Henrietta Barnett (died 1936); Sir Frederick Lindemann, Lord Cherwell (died 1957); Sir Samuel Scott of Yews, Bt (died 1960); the EPA Fund (1977); Lee Shau Kee in memory of Sir Man Kam Lo (1978); Dr D. von Bothmer and Mrs Joyce von Bothmer in memory of Sir Maurice Bowra, Warden 1938-70 (1987); Dr Michael Peagram in honour of Professor R. Grants to members of the College in residence and in need of assistance are made from the Warden's Exhibition Fund, which has been established through the gellerosity of old members of the College.
