TO ALL DELEGATES
GENERAL BOOKS
Ann Pasternak Slater: Evelyn Waugh - A Critical Biography (provisional) 'Good books on Waugh have been rare', writes Martin Stannard in his Introduction to the Evelyn Waugh Critical Heritage (1984). The best, by F. J. Stopp, was published in 1958 during Waugh's lifetime. It is now out of print and was unable to cover Unconditional Surrender and A Little Learning. This lack, now that Waugh's serious reputation is growing, is keenly felt. The present study is designed to meet the present need.
Waugh has suffered from the pugnacious vitality of his character, both in his lifetime and since his death; public attention is easily deflected from the work to the man. The life is of crucial importance to the work. At the same time, Waugh's novels are outstanding examples of detached, highly controlled craftsmanship. Dr Slater plans to combine a biographical bias, drawing on all available secondary material, with a detailed critical analysis of Waugh's works.
Dr Slater is Lecturer in English at St. Anne's College, Oxford.
The proposal has been read by Dr Roger Lonsdale, Professor John Bayley, and Dr Valentine Cunningham and has their support.
