Letter from Henry Hardy to Andrew Malcolm, 16th October 1992

Preamble. After I had at last reached a settlement agreement with Oxford University (1st July 1992), and soon after the subsequent appearance in Oxford (briefly in a Blackwell's window display) of the hardback of Making Names, and approaching two years after our last encounter, across Gavin Lightman's courtroom, I received this startling item from Henry Hardy, sent to me c/o AKME's then catalogue address. - A. Dear Andrew,

I hope this finds you. I just wanted to say that I was delighted to discover (only yesterday) that Making Names was finally in print. You may have wondered, but I have never deviated from my view that it ought to be published, and I am very pleased that it now has been. It looks as if AKME has been set up for the purpose, which means, presumably, that you are not getting the full representation and distribution you would get from an established publisher, but I have no doubt that you are championing the book effectively none the less. The production job seems to me very good. Maybe you will sell paperback rights? I gather you have had a good review in the THES [in fact the TES - by : R. W. Noble] but I haven't yet seen this. I should be fascinated to know how the book is selling.

It's a bit odd to quote from publishers on the back without explaining the history of the book inside (except for the Author's Note, which would be entirely cryptic to anyone who does not know the story). But no doubt you had your reasons.

No need to reply: I simply wanted to congratulate you on publication.

Yours,

Henry Hardy
